Ice Skating

Year-round ice. It’s not just for cocktail drinkers. Ice-skaters and hockey fans can lace up, too, no matter the season.

Home to an elite men’s minor hockey team (the Sun Valley Suns, who play home games here all winter), the Saturday night Sun Valley Summer Ice Shows, and winter and summer public ice time, the Sun Valley Ice Rink’s outdoor ice-sheet and indoor arena enjoy one of the most spectacular locations out and a bedazzling list of big-name skaters often practicing and performing there. (Skate rentals are available at the fully equipped Pro Shop for feet of all sizes, except the absurdly freakish. Sorry. Group and private lessons are also available with a staff of pros led by Olympic silver medallist Linda Fratianne. Check the current indoor ice rink schedule for times and use.)

In deep winter, (from December holidays until President’s Week, weather-permitting) join a pick up game of hockey or broomball at the natural ice rink at Christina Potters Ice Rink in Atkinson's Park in downtown Ketchum. It’s also host to the annual Pond Hockey tournament (every MLK weekend). With a selection of skates, helmets and hockey sticks available to borrow from the Recreation Center, admission at this unrefrigerated, two acre ice rink is free (although you might have to shovel the ice!)

Every winter, the town of Hailey converts the Roberta McKercher Park, by way of hoses and an old Zamboni, from a grassy field into a local’s outdoor ice rink. It’s a great place to come in your jeans, bring some old skates and a hockey stick or, more commonly, tennis shoes and a broom. The only amenities provided are two goals at each end of the field, so bring your own hot chocolate (and try to stay away from the edges as they tend to sprout grass and get bumpy).
